KING ABDUL AZIZ UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF MEDICINE DEPARTMENT OF ANATOMY
أختي الطالبة في السنة الثانية طب بشري أهلا و سهلا بك في قسم التشريح YOUR STUDY GUIDE 1427/1428H 2006/2007G
WELCOME NOTE TO THE STUDENTS Dear students, welcome to the second year medicine. As you know the study of our Medical school includes three stages:
Stage I: the preparatory stage (First Year). Stage II: the Academic (basic medical sciences) stage (Second and Third Years). Stage III: the Clinical stage (Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Years).
Congratulation, you passed stage I. But what about stage II? Stage II includes the basic medical sciences. The aim of this stage is to lay down a solid foundation for the subsequent full-time clinical study in stage III of the MBBS program. This foundation will include knowledge, skills and attitudes, particularly attitudes toward the learning process. The curriculum philosophy in stage II is enforcing the development of a mixture of teaching approaches including “student-directed learning”. By the end of stage II, you should be ready to be much more involved in the control of the learning process.
Courses of Stage II: · During the Second Year: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Islamic Studies, English Language. · During the Third Year: Anatomy, Physiology, Clinical Biochemistry and Pathology, Parasitology and Microbiology.
Department of Anatomy have the honor to introduce this study guide to you hoping that it may be helpful in making you oriented with the aim, objectives, contents of our courses, and through it, you find the answers of the frequently asked questions.
With my best wishes
Dr. Abdulmonem Al-hayani Head of Anatomy Department INTRODUCTION TO THE SYLLABUS
This course guide provides students and the Faculty a clear description of the courses, their contents, and the sequence of their implementation. It mentions the level of achievement, students are expected to attain. Evaluation procedures and grading scores are also described.
Mixing of male and female students is not allowed in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; consequently, they are taught separately by male and female staff respectively. Under this situation, the course guide is useful in directing both staff and students to the expected level of achievements and is an attempt to keep a balance and an equilibrium in academic attainments for two different groups of students, taught by separate staff.
Course objectives for different areas of Gross Anatomy, Histology and Embryology are described in different sections of the guide, the-course contents, lectures, dissection sessions and practical classes, presented in a proper sequence, coordinating with Department of Physiology.
COURSE DESCRIPTION AND ORGANIZATION
The Department offers the courses of Gross Anatomy of the human body, Histology and Embryology to the 2nd year students of Medicine. The aim is to prepare them for the subsequent clinical years off study.
The students are expected to acquire relevant information of direct clinical bearing without the details of pure academic importance; further, the aim of these courses is to foster habits and attitudes of independent learning among the students so that they are able to keep abreast with latest development in the fields of their interest during subsequent professional career.
The second year course is divided into three major learning modules:
I. GROSS HUMAN ANATOMY.
II. HISTOLOGY
III. Embryology.
MAJOR COURSE OBJECTIVES
On completion of the courses of study in Anatomy and related disciplines, the students shall be able to: 1. Comprehend the anatomical terms, use them correctly, and develop a positive approach-to the subject. 2. Understand important single muscles, their origin, insertion, nerve supply, actions and important relations. Describe Muscle Groups, their actions, nerve supply and effects of nerve injury. 3. Recognize anatomical structures correctly and comprehend the topographic anatomy of the regions of abdomen, pelvis, perineum, thorax and extremities by actual dissection, prosection and museum study. 4. Understand the classifications of bones, their general features, structure, functions and the mechanism of displacement of bone fragment at common sites oŁ fractures. 5. Understand the important joints of the body, their movements and the muscles producing these movements. 6. Acquire information of different fascial planes in different regions and their surgical importance. 7. Understand the general plan of lymphatic drainage of the body, regional lymph nodes where the common malignant growth can spread. 8. Interpret normal radiograms and C.T. scans of the body and demonstrate, by inspection, palpation and percussion, important bony landmarks, muscles, tendons, blood vessels, nerves and viscera on the living body. 9. Apply the knowledge and skill in solving clinical problems and interpret anatomical relationship to common clinical conditions. 10. Recognize the cellular components of normal tissues and organs of the body and correlate structure to their functions and develop ability to comprehend the mechanism of deranged function in various pathological conditions in the senior clinical years of study. 11. Understand normal development of the human embryo and fetus and acquire information about causes of developmental anomalies. 12. Develop concepts and sufficient understanding of the subject to be able to pursue post-graduate studies and continuing medical education and develop habits of self-learning.
