HISTOLOGY COURSE DETAILS
1. Introduction to Histology, The Cell Objectives: After completion of this section, the student should be able to know: § How to correlate the predominance of a cell organelle and the function of the cell Lecture § Definition of histology. § The Cell o Structure and function of cell organelles o Cell inclusions o nucleus Practical § Electro micrographs of cell.
2. Blood Objectives After this session, the student should be able to: § Read a blood report § Know the relation between leucocytes and diseases
Lecture § Structure and function of RBCs, WBCs & platelets. § The percentage of each type of blood cells.
Practical § Blood film showing RBCs, WBCs & platelets.
3. Epithelial tissue: Objectives: After completion of this section, the student should be able to: § Have a concept of basic tissues of the body § Correlate between the site and structure of each type of epithelium and the function of the organ. § Correlate between the surface modification and the function of the organ Lecture § General characteristics & function § Types & sites § Structure of each type § Epithelial polarity & modifications of cell surfaces Practical § Simple cuboidal epithelium: slide of thyroid. § Simple squamous epithelium: slide of kidney. § Pseudostratified columnar ciliated epithelium: slide of trachea. § Stratified squamous keratinized epithelium: slide of skin.

Connective tissue Objectives After this session, the student should be able to: § Differentiate microscopically between the different types of CT proper. § Correlate between structure, site & function of each type. Lecture § General characteristics of connective tissue proper § Structure & functions of cells § Structure & types of fibers § Structure of ground substance § Types of CT proper & sites of each § General functions of CT proper
5. Cartilage Objectives After this session, the student should be able to: § Differentiate microscopically between the different types of cartilage (hyaline, elastic, fibrocartilage) § Correlate between structure, site & function of each type. Lecture § Types (hyaline, elastic, fibrocartilage) § Structure, sites & functions of each type
6. Bone
Objectives After this session, the student should be able to: § Differentiate microscopically between the different types of bone (compact, spongy) § Correlate between structure, site & function of each type. Lecture § Types (compact, spongy) § Structure, sites & functions of each type § Structure & functions of bone cells Practical § Slides of loose areolar CT and adipose CT § Slide of hyaline cartilage (trachea) § Slide of elastic cartilage (ear pinna) § Slides of spongy & compact bone.
7. Muscular tissue Objectives After this session, the student should be able to: § Differentiate microscopically between the different types of muscle fibers (LS & TS). § Correlate between structure & the mode of action of each type. Lecture § General histological structure & types § Skeletal muscle § Smooth muscle § Cardiac muscle & conducting system of heart Practical § Slide of skeletal muscle.

8. Nervous tissue
Objectives After this session, the student should be able to: § Correlate between the structure of neurons and ganglia. § Know the importance of neuroglia. Lecture § Types of neurons. § Histology of the neuron. § Types and structure of nerve fibers. § Structure of ganglia. § Structure and types of synapses. § Neuroglia and their functions. Practical § Slide of nerve trunk (osmic acid).
9. Lymphatic system Objectives After this session, the student should be able to: § How does the immune system start to work? § Differentiate microscopically between organs containing lymphoid tissue § Correlate between the structure of these organs and their functions § Know the importance of these organs in the immune function of the body Lecture § Cells involved in the immune system § Distribution of lymphoid tissue § Structure of lymphoid organs o Thymus & Lymph node o Spleen o Tonsils o Peyer′s patches Practical § Slides of thymus and spleen 10. Respiratory System Objectives After this session, the student should be able to: § Know the structural basis of respiratory tract § Know the structure of trachea and adult lung § Correlate between the structure of these organs and their functions § Know the functions of the blood-air barrier and the alveolar phagocytes Lecture § Nasal cavity, olfactory and respiratory epithelium § Nasopharynx and larynx. § Tachea & bronchi. § Lungs and blood-air barrier. Practical § Slides of trachea and lung.

Cardiovascular System Objectives After this session, the student should be able to: § Differentiate microscopically between different arteries and different veins § Correlate between the structure of blood vessels and their function Lecture § General structure of the heart and blood vessels § Arteries (large, medium-sized & small) § Veins (large, medium-size &small) Practical § Slide of aorta
12. Digestive System Objectives After this session, the student should be able to: § Differentiate microscopically between the different organs of the digestive system § Correlate between the structure and function of these organs Lecture § Oral cavity o Lip & tongue § Alimentary tract o Oesophagus. o Stomach o Small & large intestines. § Digestive glands o Liver o Pancreas o Salivary gland Practical § Slide of oesophagus
13. Urinary System Objectives After this session, the student should be able to: § Know the structure of different organs of the urinary system § Correlate between structure and function of these organs Lecture § Kidney § Blood renal barrier § Juxta-glomerular apparatus § Ureter, urinary bladder & urethra Practical § Slide of kidney.
