COURSE SCOPE AND RATIONALE

Introduction

This syllabus is a guide to the course in Anatomy, Histology and Embryology for second year Nursing. The Department of Anatomy provides a study program which aims to help students to acquire new knowledge and skills essential for the study and practice in medicine. The department also aims to introduce the students to some desirable independent learning habits and attitudes necessary to pursue further training in clinical practice in the Faculty of Medicine and Allied Sciences. This course extends over one semester period of fifteen (15) academic weeks. The total academic hours for the whole course are ninety (90). There will be one quiz examination, mid-term examination and a final examination at the end of the course.

 Course Description

The second year course in Human Anatomy and Histology for Nursing students is system based learning. Starting with Introduction, the students learn the Gross and Microscopic Anatomy of all the body systems as well as General Embryology, details of which are given in the relevant section.

Gross anatomy lectures are programmed after the demonstration sessions. In addition to the basic anatomical knowledge; the lectures aim at emphasizing the anatomical basis of clinical application.

Histology lectures explain histological structure, and its relation to functions; demonstration of Histology slides follows the lectures to reinforce the lecture topics.

Embryology course is theoretical and taught in lectures with the help of models.

The students are expected to acquire relevant information without the details of pure academic importance.

 Teaching Methodology

The students attend six (6) hours teaching per week. Two lectures for Anatomy, one lecture for each of Histology and Embryology and two hours for Anatomy Practical.

In lecture the teaching is on board with the help of models and audiovisual aids. The two hours practical session is for teaching on human cadavers, specimens and models.
